The Meaning Behind the Chinese Wedding Dress
The Chinese wedding dress carries centuries of blessings. Red silk symbolizes joy and prosperity, while gold and silver threads represent wealth and harmony. Every motif — the dragon, the phoenix, the peony — reflects the values of love, family, and legacy passed from one generation to the next.
At JINZA, we honour these heirloom traditions and bring them to life for modern brides who wish to celebrate their roots with grace and individuality. Every bespoke piece is made to be worn, treasured, and passed down.
The Three Most Iconic Styles: Qun Kwa, Xiu He Fu & Wedding Qipao

What Is a Qun Kwa?
The Qun Kwa is the most traditional Chinese wedding dress, originating in Hong Kong and rooted in Cantonese wedding culture. It consists of a fitted jacket and skirt, both hand embroidered with gold and silver threads.
Common motifs include the dragon and phoenix — representing the union of husband and wife — alongside peonies symbolising prosperity and family blessings.
The Qun Kwa is traditionally worn for the Chinese tea ceremony, where the bride formally honours her parents and new family. It is the choice for brides who want to honour their heritage fully and create a piece that can be passed down through generations.
At JINZA, every Qun Kwa is made entirely to your measurements with hand embroidery worked stitch by stitch. A fully embroidered Qun Kwa can take 6 to 14 months to complete.

What is Xiu He Fu?
The Xiu He Fu is a modern Chinese wedding dress that combines the elegance of traditional Chinese embroidery with a more contemporary silhouette. It features a structured jacket and an A-line or circular skirt that creates beautiful movement and photographs exceptionally well.
It is the choice for brides planning a full bed ceremony before the tea ceremony, or those who want the drama of a sweeping skirt alongside the cultural significance of hand embroidery.
The 365-degree circular skirt of the Xiu He Fu is one of its defining features — romantic, regal, and unlike anything in Western bridal fashion.
At JINZA, the Xiu He Fu is made entirely to your measurements with embroidery and fabric chosen together during your private consultation.

What is a Wedding Qipao?
The wedding Qipao — also known as the Cheongsam — is a fitted one-piece Chinese wedding dress made from silk or brocade. Its high collar, side slits, and precise tailoring highlight the bride's figure while carrying deep cultural symbolism.
The modern mermaid Qipao combines a bias cut silhouette with a dramatic flared hem or train — elegant, practical, and stunning in photographs. It is the choice for brides who want a sleek, contemporary look without losing their connection to Chinese tradition.
The wedding Qipao is worn for tea ceremonies, wedding banquets, receptions, and evening events — versatile enough to carry through an entire wedding day.
At JINZA, every wedding Qipao is made entirely to your measurements in silk, with hand embroidery, lining, and details chosen to reflect your personal story.
Which Chinese Wedding Dress Is Right for You?
Choosing your Chinese wedding dress comes down to your ceremony, your style, and what you want to carry forward from this day.
Choose the Qun Kwa if you are honouring Hong Kong or Cantonese tradition, if your tea ceremony is the centrepiece of your wedding day, or if you want a piece that can be passed down to your daughter. The Qun Kwa is an heirloom garment — made to last generations, not just one day.
Choose the Xiu He Fu if you are planning a full bed ceremony before the tea ceremony, if you love the drama of a sweeping circular skirt, or if you want something that photographs beautifully from every angle. The Xiu He Fu makes a statement that no Western bridal gown can replicate.
Choose the Wedding Qipao if you want to wear your Chinese dress for multiple events — tea ceremony, banquet, and reception. Its fitted silhouette is elegant and practical, and a modern mermaid cut with a train gives you the drama of a bridal gown with the cultural depth of a Qipao.

How Your Bespoke Chinese Wedding Dress Is Made

Silk, Hand Embroidery and the Details That Make Each Piece Yours
The fabric and embroidery you choose set the tone for the entire garment — how it looks, how it feels, and what it means on the day.
Silk is the traditional choice for Chinese wedding dresses. Breathable, fluid, and luminous, silk catches light in a way no other fabric can match — and photographs beautifully across an entire wedding day. Silk brocade and jacquard weave pattern directly into the fabric, adding texture and depth without heavy embroidery.
Hand embroidery is worked stitch by stitch using Shu and Panjin techniques — two of the most refined embroidery traditions in Chinese craft. Every motif is chosen for its meaning. The dragon and phoenix represent the union of husband and wife. The peony represents prosperity and family honour. The lotus represents purity and new beginnings. The sea wave represents eternity.
For multicultural weddings, motifs from both cultures can be woven into a single garment — honouring both families in one piece.
Your family name in Chinese characters can be embroidered into the lining, hem, or any hidden detail — carried with you through the day without anyone else knowing it is there.
Designed Together — Chinese Wedding Dress and Tang Suit
At JINZA we design both garments together — the bride's Chinese wedding dress and the groom's Tang suit — so that every detail speaks to each other. The same silk. The same embroidery story. The same colour carried through both pieces.
This is something only a bespoke atelier can do. Off-the-rack dresses and suits can be paired by colour. But two garments designed together from the first consultation — made to both your measurements, sharing the same motifs and meaning — that is something entirely different.
If your groom is also commissioning his Tang suit or Zhongshan suit at JINZA, we begin the design conversation together from the start.

Frequently Asked Questions
The Qun Kwa is the most traditional style — a fitted jacket and skirt hand embroidered with gold and silver threads, rooted in Cantonese wedding culture and made to be passed down through generations. The Xiu He Fu is more contemporary with a structured jacket and dramatic 365-degree circular skirt, ideal for brides who want movement and romance. The wedding Qipao is a fitted one-piece dress in silk or brocade — sleek, elegant, and versatile enough to wear across an entire wedding day. At JINZA all three styles are made entirely to your measurements.
The Chinese tea ceremony is one of the most meaningful moments of a wedding day — the moment a bride formally honours her parents and new family. The most traditional choice is the Qun Kwa, worn for its deep cultural significance and hand embroidered symbolism. The Xiu He Fu is also a popular choice for its dramatic circular skirt and comfortable fit through a long ceremony. Many brides also choose a fitted wedding Qipao for its elegance and practicality. At JINZA, we help you choose the right style for your ceremony during your private consultation — considering your family's traditions, your wedding venue, and how many outfit changes you are planning.
Yes — and this is something only a bespoke atelier can do. When both garments are commissioned together at JINZA, we design them as a coordinated pair from the first consultation — same silk, same embroidery story, same colour carried through both pieces. The dragon on his Tang suit, the phoenix on your dress. The same sea wave at the hem. Your family names embroidered on both. This is what bespoke means at JINZA.
Absolutely. At JINZA we built our foundation making Western wedding dresses before specialising in Chinese bridal wear. We understand both Eastern and Western construction and how to flatter different body shapes. We adapt every Qun Kwa, Xiu He Fu, or Qipao to fit you perfectly. For multicultural weddings we blend embroidery motifs from both cultures to honour both families equally.
A hand-embroidered Chinese wedding dress can take several months to complete, depending on design complexity. A fully embroidered Qun Kwa may take up to 6 to 14 months, while a simpler Qipao requires 3 to 6 months. Off-the-rack options are available in the store. We recommend booking your consultation as early as possible to allow time for fittings and adjustments.
Yes. Your family name in Chinese characters can be embroidered on the lining, hem, or any detail of your dress — a personal touch that is entirely yours and invisible to everyone except those who know to look for it. Custom embroidery motifs can also be added — from dragons and phoenixes to flowers, birds, or any symbol that carries personal meaning. One of our brides had her late mother's name stitched into her Qipao so she could carry her through the day. Another had her cat and dog hand embroidered onto her dress. If it matters to you, it can be made part of the garment.
Yes. Most of our brides are outside Los Angeles. We work through Zoom consultations, ship fabric swatches, and provide muslin fittings by mail. Your dress will be tailored to your measurements and shipped securely to you anywhere in the United States or internationally.
